Walking on suicide

Walking "out of the darkness" on Ocean City's boardwalk

Suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in America, according to www.afsp.org .

Salisbury University’s Stand4You team organized the “Out of the Darkness” community walk in Ocean City on Sept. 28. More than 200 volunteers walked the length of the boardwalk to represent their lost loved ones affected by suicide and to advocate for its prevention.

SU senior Jazmine Williams decided to participate because she personally related to the cause.

“I have lost someone to suicide,” she said. “And I have also gotten a phone call from a friend of mine who was having thoughts of suicide.”

No one was discouraged from participation by the organizers but encouraged to be the faces of their deceased friends and family.

The prevention walk benefited the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Donations surpassed its goal set by the Stand4You team and landed at $695 by the end of the day.
